Default How much do plant operators make?

Was talking to a guy today and he told me that they were hiring at his plant. (I think it was an Exxon plant, not sure) I know that operators make bank, but I was wondering if anyone has any specific numbers? Not looking to give up the current gig, but you never know. 4 tens sound pretty fricken nice.....

Yeah, I always heard that. He said it's not so bad if you have a stable work history and can pass a drug test. He came out and told me about it. It was just kinda weird. I really haven't considered a job change (got 12 years in where I'm at).

prolly 32-38.00 from what i've been told. Na, i wish. that's basically what they do all day oh and talk **** to contractors.

i work for a company that services railcars in most plants along the channel and everywhere else.

alot of plants now require a process technology certificate, 5 years experience or know someone.

I used to drop cable in Pasadena plants and noticed pretty much the same thing. I spoke with one or two of the operators and they told me that when things heat up or it's time to do the nitty gritty, you better know your stuff to the hilt and that's what keeps you on board.

Dropping cable where I work means taking a dump.....but yeah this was before the internet got huge. I'm sure they surf the internet all day, read magazines and look at gauges.

Usually starting pay is $20-25/ hr. and top out $29-$35/hr.

Depending on the overtime, the lowest ive ever seen an operator make is $65k (that was 6 yrs ago) and the highest was this year, i believe he made just over $130k.

I've been an operator for 7 yrs and haven't made below 75k yet. We do read some magazines and talk **** to contractors (^^ lol), but we get paid for what we know how to do, not for what we do on a daily basis.

Shift work sucks. I still haven't gotten used to it. Stay away from 4 on 4 off! The "dupont schedule" is what you want. 1 week off every month and you still get 1/2 of your weekends

do you need to get a cert or degree to get in or can you just walk in and learn if you "know" someone

Been an operator for over 10yrs and I have worked the 3/2 schedule 4on 4 off and the dupont. I have to disagree with you! The 4on 4 off was the best. the Dupont makes you seem like you work all the time the first half of the month and then you get these 7days off, but it is Monday-Suday= 1 weekend still and if you have a wife she works Monday - Friday you are by yourself so no going out of town etc... The 4/4 well you work a month of weekends and then you are of a month of weekends, but anyone can make it 4 days and it gets you on a better regular schedule with the dupont I can never get in a routine to make the adjustments from nights to day etc... I had a great setup with 4/4 JMO! Plus once you are off for 7days it is real hard to go back to work also, if you only have 4 days off it is not as hard IMO. plus 4 days will get you 12 day off and on the dupont it will only get you 11 LOL! Over time is not always there depends on where you work and what they do etc... some have periodic turnarounds some co have bonuses such as BP and some only have to cover for Vacation etc so it depends, but I never count on it I base my bill off @65k or so. Good luck you will find various opinons on that the schedules though. I just know what was best for me and the majority that have worked the 4/4 and the dupont. This year the average here where I work was 140K!
