I hear good things about the Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal Head Gaskets. Theyre available in .042" thickness leaving you with a nice .034 quench. Theyre steel and graphite construction, not MLS. Seems like a great deal for under twenty buck a piece, when cometics are just too much money. The thing is, summit says theyre only tood on 98-00 cars. Would these really not work on a 2002 car with 241 heads? Im not really up on my head gasket knowledge, but I though it was only the 97 and 98 motors that were different.

I special ordered those gaskets when I thought I was going with some better heads. That never happened but what I found out about those gaskets was that they were NOT .042 but actually .054 just like the stock ones. The story I got from Mr Gasket was that when they first released them they were .042 but then switched manufacturers and when that switch happened they ended up being .054. I got alot of different answers before that one so research it thoroughly with Mr gasket before buying them. This was about 4 -5 months ago. What tipped me off was a number stamped in them that was the same # as a Fel-Pro that was .054.

Those bastards. If its gonna be .054, I might as well just use the dirt cheap GM MLS that I know will work and wont have problems with. Isnt there any other option for a mid 30's quench for under $60 or so? I cant see spending the money for the cometics or any of the copper gaskets. Its just too damn expensive.

I just contacted summit and they insisted that they were .042, although I cant be certin he did anything other than read the specs in the computer. I can always return them if theyre the wrong size, no?

As long as you do not rip open the bag they came in (if they are packed like OEM)

Another option are the Felpro .041 but there is mixed reviews on those.

I don't see any harm in doing that. Slice a small spot in the packaging and mic them to be sure.

If I remember correctly the problem with the fel-pro .041's was that the bore size was incorrect.

I just bought some straight from Mr. Gasket and I had heard that they had changed the thickness so I used a micrometer to measure the thickness and it's about .045. I suspect they compress when the heads are torqued down.

Yes, they do compress a bit. .003 seems about right to me. This is good news, thanks for the confirmation on the thickness.

Anyone know if these will fit 01 and 02 cars? I cant see why they would fit the 00's and not 01+.

They will work the older heads just have it where it seals the recess in the head at #3&6 cyl but will work on all thye heads the newer gaskets where designed to go around this be cause the newer heads doesen't have it!Maybe this helps!

the mr gasket are nothing more than victor reinz stock head gaskets (5975 and 5976 i think). they even have the VR symbol on them. they measured out at .057". i called VR about their gaskets when i did the wife's car. the most they will compress is .003"-.007". and they said the .007" is stretching it.

Well, they are gaskets repackaged by Mr. Gasket and actually manufactured by/for victor. I called Victor and the tech people say they are .050-.056 thick & they compress .003. Mr. Gasket says they are .045 & they compress .003. I opened the package and they mic @ .045. This is still a bunch of crap because this isn't a high performance gasket, it's just the victor standard gasket and if the manufacturer doesn't know the thickness and the repackager/reseller doesn't agree with the manufacturer, it's probably wise to avoid it. I'll be looking for something else.

I've ordered these direct from Mr. Gasket and they are the VR .054" graphite gaskets IDENTICAL to the stock GM graphites. Even the dorks at Mr. Gasket didn't know they've been switched out. This was just a couple months ago I went thru all that.....I was thoroughly pissed after special ordering and everything when I could have picked them up at the dealer the same day for less money......

Yes same thing happened to me called the tech line and emailed and was told by both they were .042. Ordered a set and they were .054 victor renz repacks. They shrink wrap them on cardboard so you destroy the package to measure them.Bunch of *********!
