Default Timing on a daily street driven LS. How do you know?......

How do you guys decide you have too much? My car is really loud and I've not heard any detonation yet but I'd like to revisit my MAP and RPM based curves to wring as much power and economy as I can from my 5.3

First mistake is assuming you'll hear detonation, in a loud car you'll hardly hear detonation occur. You may be able to hear it start to ping/pre-ignite though.

That's my point. I've not heard and detonation or pinging before and I kinda doubt I would even if it was with more timing.

So in such a situation what do you base timing judgments off of?

Without tuning at the track or on a dyno ? Hard to say.

I would find what you're happy with and keep it safe if not using the above.

My 4.8 made the most power at 36* over less, I didn't even try any more than that, so it might want more. Depends on the motor. Compression and octane will determine the max timing.

I assume that's total timing just on the rpm table at WOT?

I'm actually more curious with how much timing at part throttle total with the map and rpm based curves

Zone does not operate vehicles at this "part throttle" you speak of. His accelerator pedal is a 2 position switch.

44* at part throttle cruise with the engine at 2000 throwing 8* through the MAP.

That's not far from where I'm at currently.

I'm. 32• on rpm plus another 14• at high vacuum part throttle

I tried to ask in the tuner section what the baseline cruise timings were for a stock LS1 for reference and did not get a single answer. Not sure if none of them ever looked or if they just don't care.

That would certainly be some interesting information to know.

I'm suprised this hasn't come up before. How much timing at WOT on the rpm curve is a common enough topic that I'm pretty confident with so many people running similar low 30's that it's a pretty safe zone.

But how much is too much on the MAP function as far as I've found has not been addressed.

I have tuned enough old school distributor cars that I have a pretty good idea. At light throttle it was not uncommon for them to hit into the low 50s. However, knowing what LS engine do from the factory would be great to know.

Yeah, but that was with lousy heads and little quench. I'm in to see what the factory timing runs...

It would appear as though that stock LS1's run a great deal less timing than we do. Which really comes as no suprise
