Undersized Intercooler Vs. No Intercooler
So I stuffed a LS1 with a Turbonetics 7868 turbo in my E30 M3. Im shooting for 10psi MAX and 500/600hp. The problem is that I am limited in space for an intercooler due to the fact that I am not modifying the chassis/bumpers at all. The biggest "off the shelf" unit I have found that will fit has a core of 18"x11"x3" with 2.5" pipes and is "rated" at 600cfm. Im thinking that the core is too small but my question is is an undersized intercooler better than no intercooler?

Good question, Ive been wondering the same myself man. Im going to be using E85 and meth so I feel I don't even need to spend big bucks on a nice intercooler, but if I use a cheap CX racing intercooler, is it going to hurt me/ loose PSI?

If your fighting detonation with pump fuel I'd say go with an IC. If your running E85 then I wouldn't worry about an IC at 10lbs.

Charge temps shouldnt be too bad due to the big turbo and relatively low boost, so the only real downside is if the core is a cheap piece of **** that doesnt actually flow any air
So make sure you use something like a Garret core, or one of the vertical flow units as already suggested and you wont have any restrictions worth worrying about.

The core will work if it does what the seller claims. They are claiming a 600CFM it has less than 1psi pressure drop at 12lbs. You plan on 10lbs. Even if you push over 600cfm the most it is going to do is have a little pressure drop across the core. Since your running such low boost anyway I wouldn't worry about it. And it's not like you'll have alot invested in the IC anyway.
I say go for it. Might as well throw on a little alky/meth inj as well. It sure won't hurt you any.

The space I'm working within is approx. 24x20x3. So I believe the orientation of a vertical flow intercooler would only work if the core size was dramatically reduced. As far as the turbo size it thought it would be better to barely push a big turbo rather than max out a smaller one. The car weighs 2700lbs and makes 400hp n/a so a little lag wouldn't hurt.
