I'm doing an engine swap and running into a clearance issue with the big water pump pulley on the front of the LS1.

Can a waterpump from an LS3 or LS2 engine be used on the LS1? I'm considering this one:

Or this one:


Is there a reason why these wouldn't work on an LS1? They all say either LS2 or LS3 but aside from displacement, I'm not sure what the differences are. I REALLY need that 1.5-2" that that pulley takes up.

This is the one I'd like to buy. I want to use it as is, just bolt up and go. Is what's shown the "bell pulley" as mentioned earlier? The diameter looks the same as what came with my LS1. I just want to make sure the offset for the belt isn't different than the LS1.

I need one without the bell pulley. The bell pulley is what is creating my problem. It's just barely too deep. I need a water pump with a shaft that's about 1.5 inches shorter than the original.

Have you looked into a corvette waterpump...I know the vettes have pullies that are different than the fbodies.

The problem when changing water pumps is that all your other accs still line up. That's the hurdle.

Any water pump will bolt up on any LS motor. The one in the photo looks like a corvette pump, it is shallower than the f body pump. It also moves the belt back about 3/4" so your crank pulley, alternator, PS, tensioner wont line up. You'll need to swap out the accessories for corvette or aftermarket (Kwik) spaced correctly.

Is it possible just to replace the large bell pulley with a smaller more square shape as per the LS2/Vette pump ?

I'd like a smaller pulley on my LS1 pump as my blower belt touches the pump on occasion and gets eaten away, but must retain the same accessory belt position.

With the bell type LS1 pump, can the pulley be removed ? If I could remove it, shorten it by about 1/2" and then refit, that would achieve what I need and the belt should still be fine.

I've removed f body and truck pulleys to put a truck pulley on the f body pump. Never did a vette pully. You'll need a press or 3 jaw puller to get it off. When you press the new pulley on, take off the rear cover and support the shaft otherwise you'll just push the whole assembly into the back cover.
If you're putting a vette pulley on a f body pump, there may be ribs that interefere with the depth you can press it on.
Would the vette pump with 3/4" spacers solve your issue?

Thanks. I cannot space my pump, or any pump. It will foul my blower bracket. Already looked at that idea.

Dont suppose you have any photos of the rear of the large bell pulley ? Are pulleys available to buy separately ?

If the pulley was square like the Evans short option, it would be ideal.
Ive emailed Evans to see which pump may suit...I just dont like the idea of having to use a specific coolant.
Water is free and easy.

Another option would be the short pump aka LS2/vette etc and somehow extend the pulley forwards by 3/4" to reach the belt.
Or if a new or alternative pulley was available, install this to reach.

Sorry, no pulley pics except for the one already mounted. Pulleys are not available separately. But leaky water pumps with pulleys are nearly free.
You can do what the 911 swap guys do and use a Mezerie remote electric pump and thermostat.

This pump is quite the extreme but since we're on the subject. You have to route the belt kinda crazy, not sure if it helps. If you want to go this route, I happen to have a pump, but not the crank pulley to go with it.

There are 2 things to watch for:
- alignment of the pulley plane with the other pulleys on the engine;
- thermostat type (1-piece, 2-piece);

to remedy the first, you have to change all the accessories;

to remedy the second, you get the other type of thermostat.
