If you could rent a lift/bay by the hour... What would you consider to be a fair rate per hour and/or per day? I can't find any businesses in my area that rent out shop space to guys who want to wrench their own stuff but really need a lift to do a job sometimes. Not everybody can install a lift at their house or apartment for that matter.

looking to do something similar for night-wrenchers and independent techs that are in between working for someone else and opening their own shop. I'd just provide the lift (after a quick 'lift training' session and signed waiver), fluids & fluids recycling, no parts, no tools. Also let guys store project cars outside in a fenced/ video monitored area. Poll is up... just getting some feedback as to who would be interested, what would be reasonable to charge. My tenant owns a Honda/Acura specialty outfit and I get lift time almost whenever I want but I don't like to impose too much.

Let me clarify- not just lift, but all the stuff you'd need like traditional shop fixtures, machines, etc. Including an alignment lift, engine hoists, transmission jacks, 60 ton press, yada yada yada... you get the idea- all the resources you were referring to.
And driving to PA- flew into PHL last Dec. and drove across the river to Bedminster, NJ. good people in both places, would go anytime...

I have this setup at my disposal for about $5 an hour for the lift.......on base. 
Seriously, this is a GREAT idea, but look into insurance. It's going to be wildly high. Waiver or no, if someone gets seriously injured in your place of business that you're renting time out, you can be held liable. Same goes for project cars stored outsite in a monitored area. Some would consider you liable if they're paying to store it there and it's coming off as secure with mointoring and fences.
Just my $.02. Great idea, just be careful and CYA.

I was considering the same type of business. I am in commercial real estate in the chicagoland area and there are a few properties I wanted to ****** up and provide the service. The insurance that is needed to cover any accidents that may happen is outrageously high. If anything were to happen to someone it is the liability of the shop owner, whether a waiver is signed or not. Also, you'd have to consider, what if someone is working on a project and something breaks which would not allow them to move the car, then that is 1 bay that is unavailable.
The idea is a great one, however it seems as though it is a risk vs. reward type of situation. If you could make it work, that would be an accomplishment by itself.

After working at a dealership for some time and realizing how essential a lift/rack is I think its a great idea...until guys start dropping cars and stealing tools.
$10-$15 per hour sounds reasonable. But I cant vote.

I had thought about doing this years ago, but the insurance and liability killed it. I cant vote, but $15-20 an hour would be reasonable. I think insurance and liability will up the costs closer to $50-60 an hour though. just my thoughts!
