Question Wiring MSD 8680 timing retard for activation with n2o only.

Just finished installing a TNT plate kit on a 97 formula but I'm having trouble with the timing retard. Right now, I have the msd retard hooked up to only be powered up when the n2o arming switch is turned on. So the red is going to my arming relay and the black to chassis ground. The yellow wire from the retard is hooked to the white wire from the MSD 6AL, and the white wire from the retard is going to the white on the MSD harness which goes over to the coil. So the retard box is basically placed inline between the 6AL and the coil. The problem I'm having is that the car does not want to run unless I have the arming switch turned on (retard turned on). Would I be correct to say that when the retard is not powered on that it does not pass the signal coming through the white and yellow wires? I only want the retard to be activate when I'm spraying. If the arming switch is off (retard turned off) the car idles very low, pops, etc. I know the 6AL is fine as I can bypass the retard and it works fine.

8680 instruction sheet but doesn't address activation for n2o ----> http://static.summitracing.com/globa...0_frm28680.pdf

being LT1 specific, I figure this is the correct place to post. Mods move it to n2o forum if needed.

thanks

There is a sticky in the n2o section on how to wire everything.

I've been looking through all the stickies and searching but haven't found a good answer. I can find plenty of diagrams for wiring the retard to be active all the time but none that address having the retard powered on only when the nitrous system is armed. Car does not want to run with the retard powered off.

I'm sure this has to be a simple deal.

If it works the same as my old mallory box did just hook up the 12v source to the power wire on the nitrous solenoid.

Should I add a relay on the white wire so that the retard box is bypassed completely when the system isn't armed?

I think the mallory is different. Isn't that an all-in-one box? I'm running external retard so I don't really have a trigger wire. That's really no different than how I have it now. Only difference is I provide power to the retard when the arming switch is on. You provide power when the noids activate.

Yes the Mallory is all in one. How many degrees are you pulling?

Right now I'm pulling 4* for a 100 shot. Yes it's bit high but the car has a tune with some advance so we're playing it safe until we can get everything setup and start logging.

So, anyone running a 6AL with a 8680 for timing control only activated with n2o? How did you wire it? I really don't want to leave the 8680 on all the time, pulling timing for n/a.

Nevermind, I found info on the MSD site stating that the 8680 cannot be used in this way. If it's installed between the 6AL and the coil, it must be powered on.
