I noticed today when I make right turns the signal doesn't cancel. I'd had the same problem a year ago with the left signal and replaced the springs. With everything closed tomorrow I ran out and got a new set of springs and I just go down to the springs, but they're both intact. What else could it be ... the cancel springs seem like the obvious issue?

Need one more picture. Check the bottom side of the cam. (The white circular piece that you took out.)

There should be two ridges on the collar that contact the springs. If there are grooves in the ridges, just replace the cam. While you are in there, you should replace the springs so you have a good set in there. (Its not worth having to pull the whole thing apart a couple of months from now if your old springs actually brake.)

You should be able to spin the cam by hand before you put the column back together to confirm it works.

Thanks for the reply. There do appear to be two marks worn in, though very shallow, one is deeper then the other. Not sure how well you can tell in the picture.

I tried pulling the spring from the shaft so I could put the cam in and turn it, it doesn't seem to cancel the signal either way though, I do see the ridges on the cam press in on the springs as it turns by.

Yea, your cam is worn. You should be able to pick up a new one in the HELP! section of your local parts store for a couple of bucks.

The cam/springs are really sensitive, so it doesn't take much to trip the mechanism.

Thanks ... everything is closed now so I'll check it out tomorrow, it sounds like that will take care of it. Checking stores online no one seems to have the part for a 98, the part they do have is listed as working on cars up to 95 but I think it's the same.

The steering columns are very similar all the way back to the 60's/70's, but the cams are a bit different. Tilt vs. non-tilt, airbag vs. no airbag, etc. The GM parts catalog lists different part numbers between 95 and 98, so the link above probably isn't it.

An update ... I brought my cam into the parts store and looked at the one they had an it looked identical, and the parts guy agreed. He said they probably just didn't update the packaging, though the maker's site still shows 95.

In any case ... the right turn signal now cancels. On my test drive the left signal wasn't working, was just a burned out bulb. Weird coincidence it breaks as soon as I fix the other one.
