Default Oil Pump Install...

Hi All,

I looked over at LS1howto.com and didn't see any reference to centering the pump gears with a pair 0.002" feeler gauges. So, is this not necessary?

Also, I added a 0.125" shim under the relief valve (stock '03 pump, hand ported), is that OK?

TIA!

Come on, someone here must have installed an oil pump! Or shimmed a pressure spring!

Russ, I center every oil pump on all engines I build. Sometimes it can take as much as 004". As far as your shim, that sounds excessive--try more like .070 unless your bearing clearances are huge.

Eric,

I wasn't sure on the shim, I used two 3/16" pop-rivet washers ( 0.060" ea). I will remove one. Thanks for the reply, I'll try centering it. Prolly tomorrow or Wed...

Hope I did it right... I loose-bolted the pump asm to the block, then removed the steel cover and put a 0.002" feeler gauge between the outside of the outer gear and the inside of the pump body (at the bottom) and tightened the housing bolts while pushing up on the body. Then I ran the feeler gauge around the entire outer gear and it seemed to be centered. Torqued the housing bolts, filled the cavity with Vasoline, and reinstalled the steel cover plate.
